BALLAD

Grady McGrin
Was as thin as a pin
And he never wore mufflers or hats.
He walked in the snow
With a gremlin named Joe
And a brown paper bag full of cats.

Oh, colder it grew
And his shoes, they wore through
But he never would stop for a rest.
The gremlin turned blue
And the cats, they all knew
That McGrin would not weather the test.

His fingers grew numb
And the end of his thumb
Was audacious enough to fall off.
Joe had some glue
And they fixed it like new
But the cats, they developed a cough.

It was sunny in May
And a beautiful day
When the caravan finally was found.
They had died where they stood
Like heroes all should
With their feet frozen firm to the ground.
