WONDER

Why does a cloud break itself up
into raindrops? Why doesn't it fall
like a juicy dirigible
or a large jelly bean
into the park, onto my house,
onto me?

Does God poke his fingers
into the clouds, making them giggle
and split themselves into tiny parts?
Does God want to evenly water
lawns, forests, pastures,
deserts, oceans?

Does He like to see vast
sweeping sheets of rain,
a deluge plunging
down a mountain, a misty dawn
pattering gently
against my window?

And what about snow?
Does that great white quilt overhead
simply shiver itself Into crystals?
Or does God patiently create
each exquisite flake
for his own enjoyment,
or for mine?

I will always wonder
what caused me to wonder
about these matters.
