BETWEEN US

For a long time
there has been a poem
between us. I never see it
but sometimes touch it
with both hands the way I touch
a chair when walking through the dark
house, knowing precisely its position,
its contours, its texture. Always
when I touch it you turn to me,
your eyes look straight through
the poem. My hands enclose
our silence.
